I have been seriously neglecting the whole mystery/thriller genre lately, so when I was asked to read and review What Lies Within I immediately said yes. I was intrigued by the cover and blurb and now I’ve read it I can say this novel by James Morris exceeded my expectations. I was drawn into the story from the beginning. The fast pace combined with a delightfully creepy game of hide and seek made it hard to stop reading before reaching the last page… I do not agree with everything the main character Shelley does and the love triangle was a minor setback. But since the focus in What Lies Within doesn’t lay on the romance and it is actually full of sometimes horrifying action scenes, I still really enjoyed this read. I personally wasn’t all that bothered that there weren’t many scientific details included to explain the experiment, because most answers can be guessed quite easily anyway. All in all a very entertaining thriller read with a touch of horror and genetics experiments. Recommended!

Shelley Marano lives with her father after her mother died in an accident. She is a high school senior and helps her father out in his auto body shop, but as soon as she graduates she wants to go to college. Everything changes after she received a mysterious text message. Apparently, she doesn’t only have a brother she doesn’t know about, she also is adopted and in mortal danger. Shelley and twelve others are involved in a genetics experiment than went wrong, and they are busy killing off the test subjects to hide the evidence. Shelley soon has to run for her life… But she also wants to find out who she really is.

What Lies Within is a truly entertaining read that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s full of action and even creepy at times, and the only drawback would be the few not so credible romance scenes and a love triangle. The rest of the story made up for it though and I would definitely recommend this read if you like a good and scary mystery/thriller read.

Month In Review: June 2015

Wait, it’s July already?! The last 30 days have just vaporated and I guess it’s time to start the second half of 2015… It’s officially winter down here in Argentina and I can’t go outside without freezing my butt off. I’m still frazada3working on my knitted multicolor bedspread which I hope to finish before the winter ends so I can actually use it. 😉 I love the colors so far! To the left you can see the pattern and on the right my progress so far. My cat Sienna demanded to be in the photo as well. 😀  I’m making steady progress with my reading goals, although I haven’t been able to read as much as I would have liked. Knitting this blanket is sure a lot more work than I anticipated! Still, 12 books and 5 novellas isn’t a bad number…

  • Number of books read in June: 17
  • Total number of books read this year: 80
  • Total number of pages read in June: 4.417
  • Total number of pages read this year: 27.227

Although I wasn’t able to read as much as in previous months, I still managed to read 17 titles. Five of them were novellas though and it shows in the page count, but I guess I’m far ahead on most challenges anyway. Like last month, I wasn’t as lucky with my reading choices and I have quite a few titles that received a rating of 3 stars or less… But I had some great reads as well. Hopefully next month will be better! I’m seriously behind on my reviews with 6! still pending, but hopefully I will be able to have most of them up before the end of next week.

bookishbingoprogressThis year I’m doing things slightly different and I’m including an update for the different challenges I’m participating in as well. That way I won’t be having a dozen update posts wandering around. 😉 In June I was able to finish the Bookish Bingo: Ready For Spring Challenge! One less challenge to worry about… I’ve made progress with all the other challenges as well so it looks like I will finish most of them well before the deadline. 😀

Of course I have managed to neglect the other reading and blogging goals for yet another month… I cannot say I’m surprised haha. I guess procrastination is still my middle name. 😉 I think I will just forget about my TBR pile goal because the number has only increased since I first set that goal… And I really should start finishing series and read a book or two in Spanish. If I start Outlander this month I will at least finish the goal of a book with over 800 pages… And maybe. MAYBE. I will finally sit down and finish more of those older reviews.
