- WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
I finally picked up Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and so far I’m absolutely loving it. I can’t wait to continue reading it later today! Looks like this is one of those books that is actually worth the hype around it…
- WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
* The first book I finished since last week is Serafina And The Black Cloak by Robert Beatty. A very good middle grade story that has a good mix of fantasy and scary elements and I really liked the prose.
* I then finished All The Truth That’s In Me by Julie Berry. I was more than pleasantly surprised by this historical fiction novel. Such an original, beautifully written and emotional story!
* I was in the mood for another crime read so I picked up Confessions Of A Murder Suspect by James Patterson. It’s the first time I read a Patterson YA novel, but I flew through the pages and it was a really entertaining read.
* Afterwards I decided to read Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl since it has become a tradition to reread at least one or two Roald Dahl books a year. He is one of my favorite childhood authors and I always love rereading his work. This is not my favorite, but still good.
* The last book I finished during the read-a-thon was Never Always Sometimes by Adi Alsaid. I can’t say I was impressed by this one. It wasn’t terrible but there were some parts that really bothered me…
* The last book on this list, Dark Places by Gillian Flynn, was not as great as I would have thought either. It’s definitely a dark, twisted and disturbing read with many crazy plot twists and a somewhat surprising ending, but it took me a long time to actually finish it and I didn’t like the characters…
- WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?
I have a new ARC waiting for me: Eternal War Armies Of Saints by Livio Gambarini. This book set in the 13th century is a mix of historical fiction and fantasy and I’m really looking forward to it! I really should read The Death Code by Lindsay Cummings as well, so I can at least start finishing all those poor neglected series… Although I will probably read Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng first. Last but not least, Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch is still my newest TBR jar pick.
Shame you didn’t enjoy Dark Places so much, I really liked it although preferred Gone Girl.
I love that you’re re-reading your Roald Dahl books, I remember reading these as a child too and wonder if they are as still as good 🙂

I wasn’t completely convinced by Gone Girl either, but I’m still going to try Sharp Objects soon since I’ve heard it’s better. I love Roald Dahl! The stories read better as a child, but they are still entertaining enough as an adult as well. (Especially since they bring back memories)

I re-read The Witches by Roald Dahl last year (brilliant, but I can’t believe they let kids read something that frightening!) and hopefully will re-read Matilda this year as it’s one of my all-time favourites.

Haha with everybody absolutely loving Illuminae, it would have been strange for me to not like it as well… So far I’m loving it, especially the original prose! I love Roald Dahl and Matilda is one of my favorites as well; I agree that The Witches is definitely too scary for the younger children!

I’m glad the hype is living up for Illuminae!! You have been on a reading roll, as usual. I felt the same way when I read Dark Places. It was just meh. She’s got one sick mind, though!

Illuminae is definitely worth reading so far! I love that the format is really original. It took me a long time to finish Dark Places… Without doubt a twisted and disturbing story, but it wasn’t that great for me.

So glad that you’re loving Illuminae! I loved that book. I pretty much felt the same way that you did about Dark Places. I really didn’t care for any of the characters and some of it was just too disturbing for me. Sharp Objects was much better from her.

I can’t wait to continue with Illuminae today! I’m only about 25% into the story and I want to find out what happens next. Dark Places wasn’t that good for me, but I’m definitely going to try and read Sharp Objects next month to see if I like that one better as well.

I have Dark Places on my TBR so sad to hear it didn’t really work for you – I also want to read Everything I Never Told You – a great spread of books this week Yvo.

I’ve heard Sharp Objects is a lot better than Dark Places, so I’m going to try and read that one soon. I’ve started Everything I Never Told You today and so far it’s quite interesting. 🙂

I’ve always been a bit wary of trying Gillian Flynn as there’s too much hype about them. Haven’t read a Roald Dahl in years but remember them being very good. Maybe it’s time for a re read 🙂

Gone Girl wasn’t actually worth the hype, but it’s entertaining enough if you keep your expectations low… I definitely prefer that one over Dark Places. I’ve heard Sharp Objects is better though, so I’m going to read that one soon.
I love rereading Roald Dahl every once in a while; they’re short, quick and entertaining reads. 🙂

I felt the same about Dark Places. Of her three novels it is my least favourite, I just didn’t really like the characters and it felt longer than it needed to be. Sharp Objects is much better in my opinion.

Good to hear we had similar thoughts; I also felt it was longer than it needed to be. I’m planning on reading Sharp Objects next month to see if I like it better, especially since you’re not the first telling me that one is much better. 🙂

I don’t think I’ve liked a single one of Flynn’s characters. They’re all so flawed wich I find incredible. The audio was great; did you read it or listen? Happy reading and thanks for participating in WWW Wednesday!

I agree, her characters in both Gone Girl and Dark Places aren’t likeable at all… I read it on my kindle myself; I can see why an audio version might work better in this case. Happy reading and thanks for hosting!

Sounds like Bout of Books was as successful for you as it was for me when it comes to rushing through books. I love Roald Dahl, too! I think my favorite of his is The Witches. And it looks like you’ve got an interesting line up waiting for you.
