WWW WEDNESDAYS is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World Of Words and is all about answering the three questions below.
- WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
I needed something light and entertaining after a few disappointing reads and I decided to give in to my guilty pleasure. I loved watching the first seasons of True Blood a few years ago, and I finally found the time to pick up the first book in the series the show was based on: Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. So far it’s definitely working; I’m flying through this book! I’ve also started The Bookshop Book by Jen Campbell yesterday evening, but it’s too early to tell what to feel about this book about books.
- WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
* It took me literally ages to finish Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard, and that wasn’t a good thing at all. My Red Queen reread left me liking the first book slightly less (mostly because Mare), but I still really enjoyed it. The sequel was a different matter. Glass Sword is pretty slow, Mare is really annoying and the whole plot is basically a repeat sequence of the following: Mare blindly trusts someone –> Person betrays Mare –> Mare is in deep trouble –> somehow she manages to not get killed. More complaints in my full review…
* The other book I managed to finish is Disclaimer by Renée Knight. Unfortunately yet another title I didn’t enjoy… March has been pretty unlucky so far! I couldn’t connect to the characters and the plot is a bit of a chaos and not exactly believable.
* The last is actually a DNF (probably my first DNF ever!): The Liar’s Chair by Rebecca Whitney. It was really hard to make the final decision to just stop reading this book and I still feel a bit guilty, but the thought of having to waste more time reading this story was even worse. DNF at 42%; bye bye annoying characters, unnatural and forced prose, character development and unbelievable plot!
- WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?
I will probably pick up Ice Like Fire by Sara Raasch as soon as I’m in the mood to read fantasy again… If not, I might read Random by Tom Leveen or Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard first depending of which genre I’m in the mood for. My new TBR jar pick is still Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl… I’ve also been wanting to start a new fantasy series; feel free to vote on my poll to help me decide which one to start next. 🙂

You’re the only other person I’ve come across who didn’t enjoy Disclaimer. I disliked all the characters and couldn’t believe the woman wouldn’t just tell people what happened to her!! (maybe I can believe she didn’t want to say anything in the past when it all happened, but why keep it a secret all those years later?!).
I’m really worried about Glass Sword now! haha! I had mixed feelings about Red Queen… oh dear.

Haha that might just be! 😉 I had the exact same feeling while reading Disclaimer! I mean, I don’t say it was bad what happened to her and why she would be hesitant to talk about it, but keeping it a secret that long? Not really credible.
I wanted to love Glass Sword, but it was actually quite boring and repetitive… Which is strange because the story has a lot of action. But who knows, you might enjoy it! Although the love triangle situation gets pretty bad…

I didn’t enjoy Disclaimer either, I found it very predictable all the way through. It was as if there was a great big sign post about what was coming next so I felt I knew before it happened and that just takes all the thriller aspect away from a book. It also hinged on the secret and I don’t see why she was still feeling the need to keep it a secret. It surprised me that so many people loved it. Hope you enjoy reading the books you’ve got coming up this week.

I know! I had the exact same feeling while reading Disclaimer; the story wasn’t really original and the plot all over the place. I couldn’t see the point of keeping what happened a secret so long either. Glad to hear I wasn’t the only one that didn’t enjoy it. 🙂

You’re the first person I’ve seen say they didn’t like it either. I was so disappointed with it as the premise sounded so good and I was excited to read it.

I haven’t seen all seasons, but I really enjoyed the first few. So far the book is just as entertaining! 🙂

I never actually saw the TV show but I read the books when they were first published

I read the Sookie Stackhouse books a few years ago (before I watched the TV show) and really enjoyed them. The first book is fairly similar to the show but after that it’s mostly just the characters that are similar. Usually it annoys me when shows wander from the book but in this case it works and I love both. Hope you enjoy and keep reading (although maybe not the last couple).

O good to know! I’m actually having the True Blood tune in my head now while I’m reading this book haha. I don’t think I’ll mind much that the book and TV show are different, especially since it has been a few years since I last watched the show… I will definitely continue this series soon. 😀

Liar’s Chair sound bad.I always feel guilty quitting on books so I have endured some really painful reads overtime.Your honesty is refreshing 🙂 As I said before,I look forward to reading your thoughts on our book about books.I hope it will not dissapoint you

This was actually the first time I decided to DNF a book; I already had a few painful reads this year and this one would have been one too many. 😉 I hope The Bookshop Book will be as good as people have told me!

Disclaimer and The Liar’s Chair are both on my TBR. I hate it when I feel like quitting on a book, it makes me feel guilty. It always takes me some time to make the move, but in the end, it’s better to spend time with books you actually enjoy.
I’ve been watching Pretty Little Liars but I probably won’t try the book.

I have actually never DNFed a book before for the same reason… I do feel guilty still, but I really don’t want to waste any more time trying to finish it so that makes up for it. 😉 I hope you’ll enjoy both books better than I did!
I wasn’t sure whether to read Pretty Little Liars myself because it doesn’t really seem to be my thing, but I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt after getting a free copy. Hopefully it won’t disappoint. 😉

I didn’t mind Disclaimer but do feel that it rode heavily on Gone Girl’s coat tails!

Good to hear I didn’t miss anything! I just couldn’t get myself to focus on the story any longer… Very annoying prose and characters.
Disclaimer definitely tried too hard to be like Gone Girl; I didn’t love that book either, but the suspense and plot twists were done a lot better in that book in comparison.

I don’t think I’ve never actually DNFed a book before either, and even though I feel guilty it does feel good as well. There are too many unread books still out there to waste too much time reading one I really don’t like. 😉 Happy reading and thanks for hosting!

Books about books can be pretty hit or miss for me. I hope The Bookshop Book doesn’t disappoint you, especially after your other disappointments.
I’d say congratulations on your first DNF, but I’m not sure those are in order considering my own mixed feelings about DNF-ing, even though I’m willing to do it more often these days.

The Bookshop Book is turning out to be quite a slow read, but still really interesting (fortunately enough).
I don’t like DNFing either, but I think that in this case it truly was the best option. 😉
