WWW WEDNESDAYS is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World Of Words and is all about answering the three questions below.
- WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
I’m currently almost finished with The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon. I’ve heard a lot of people complain about this book and to be honest I was a bit afraid to pick it up, but the story has pleasantly surprised me so far. I like the main characters and the fact that they belong to different ethnicities rather than the typical stereotype ‘white-American’ main character. I guess as an immigrant in Argentina, I can really relate to some of the problems they have to face. As soon as I’ve finished it, I’m reading The Thankful by Jamie Campbell, an ARC set during WWII I’ve been meaning to read for a while now. I’m also still reading Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, but I haven’t been in the mood for classics so I’m not sure when I will actually finish it.
- WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
* I first picked up The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner, a title that has been recommended to me over and over again and wasn’t able to pick up before the end of 2016. And boy do I wish I would have read it sooner! I can understand why so many people seem to love this story, because I’m now one of them. I was a little worried about the amount of religious talk included when I first started about it, but that soon went to the background. The story is exceptionally well written and basically an emotional rollercoaster. What an excellent way to start 2017!
* I then read a pending short story ARC I have been meaning to for too long, Americosis Vol. 3 by Haydn Wilks. I had forgotten just how weird and messed up this story is! In one word MADNESS, although you have to be in the mood to absorb such an amount of crazy action and weirdness.
* Afterwards, I picked up one of my most-anticipated-2017 releases, The Perfect Stranger by Megan Miranda, and it turned out to be just as good as I thought it would be. Well written, fast-paced, plot twists, suspense… Without doubt an excellent psychological thriller and my first 5 star read this year.
* I then decided to pick up Mosquitoland by David Arnold on a whim; another title I have been wanting to read for a long time now. I literally flew through the pages, and enjoyed every single minute of the ride. Another well written story with interesting characters and (road trip) plot… Looks like I have been lucky with my reading choices so far!
* Next up was another pending ARC, That Burning Summer by Lydia Syson. I enjoy reading historical fiction, especially if they are set during or around WWII, but I wasn’t too convinced by this one. It took me a long time to get a proper feel for the story, although I cannot put my finger exactly on the why. It might have been the tone, it might have been the pace, but it wasn’t as good as I thought it would be.
* The last book I picked up is You by Caroline Kepnes, a book that has been on my radar ever since I found out it had a serial killer element. I was so excited about this one, but to be honest I don’t understand why so many people seem to love this book. It might just be that this isn’t for me, but I had to make the tough decision to DNF it after only 5%. Between the annoying prose and constant swearing and sex talk/scenes, I just couldn’t take it anymore.
- WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?
I have to Netgalley ARCs pending I want to get to first: Those Who Lie by Diane Jeffrey and Missing by Monty Marsden. I’m also searching for my next fantasy read, which will probably end up being Splintered by A.G. Howard since I’m in the mood for an Alice In Wonderland retelling. My newest TBR jar pick is still The Five Stages Of Andrew Brawley by Shaun David Hutchinson.
You can also find me at Goodreads. Twitter. Bloglovin’.
Well it seems that “You” was sent your way because the universe was trying to balance out the pile of brilliant books you’d started the year with 🙂
I still haven’t read anything by AG Howard. Mostly because the Splintered series seems to have an equal number of haters and lovers. Will wait to see what you think!

Haha that might just be so! Either way, I’m glad I found at least three books that were excellent this week. 😉 And to be honest, I’m quite hesitant to pick up Splintered… Like you I’ve heard a lot of mixed things about it, but I’ve decided to just give it a go and see where it goes. Fingers crossed!

I just finished The Sun Is Also A Star a couple of days ago and quite liked it! I was a bit worried about the insta-love but I guess the plot and the circumstances made up for it. And I remember enjoying Mosquitoland by David Arnold too! Mim surely is an interesting character.

Good to hear you enjoyed both of these! I loved Mim as a character as well and I’m looking forward to find out how The Sun Is Also A Star will end. Happy reading!

The ending!!! Well, I’m excited to know what you think of the ending. 🙂

LOVED the ending! Definitely made me add an extra 1/2 star to the final rating.

I read ‘You’ last year and I did struggle with it a bit. I managed to make it through but I’ve not since found the motivation to read the second book.

Do you say it’s worth it to keep reading? I still feel kind of guilty for DNFing it at only 5%…
LikeLiked by 1 person
Um it really depends on you. I liked the book but the subject matter didn’t sit well with me. I think if you’re going to get stuck with it and end up in a slump then it won’t be worth it. Maybe come back to it at another time and see if it works at another time for you?

Sounds good, I’ll keep my copy on my kindle just in case I want to get back to it later on. Thanks!

Wow, aside from You you’ve got off to a great start with your reading this year. I really hope the good reads keep coming for you. I love Little Women but I enjoyed it more when I was younger. I hope you can get back into it at some point.

Thank you and likewise! I’ll probably continue Little Women as soon as I’ve finished some pending ARCs… It’s not that I don’t like it, but I just haven’t been feeling like reading a classic. Happy reading!

I might try You again at some point in the future… I’m really curious about the serial killer angle, but I just couldn’t get past the prose and sex talk/scenes. And I hope you will enjoy The Perfect Stranger as much as I did! ❤ Happy reading

I’ve heard nothing but good things about The Serpent King and Mosquitoland. Neither one really appealed to me first, but I’m thinking of picking them up since everyone seems to love them so much. Sorry to hear you didn’t like You! I haven’t read it yet, but I did buy it recently after hearing so many people rave about it. Hopefully, I’ll like it!

I wasn’t sure about either book either at first, but they turned out to be more than excellent. Both have original prose, plot and interesting character development. I hope you will enjoy them if you decide to pick them up! 🙂

I seem to be in the minority when it comes to not liking You, so I hope you will enjoy it better. 🙂

I’m glad you said that about You – although I finished it I didn’t want to rave about it like so many – I thought I’d missed something.

Good to know I’m not the only one who didn’t love You… I don’t like DNFing because I keep having the feeling I’m missing out, but in this case I’ll probably just leave it be.

I’m so glad you loved The Perfect Stranger!! I tried reading YOU several times and couldn’t get into it. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one. I just don’t get it.
I’ve been hesitant to read The Sun is also a Star because of the mixed reviews. So glad to know you’re enjoying it!!

It’s good to hear I wasn’t the only one struggling with You… I felt kind of bad DNFing that early on, but with so many other pending books I didn’t want to waste time agonizing. 😉 I personally enjoyed The Sun Is Also A Star, although like you I’ve seen mixed things. I found the characters and plot quite refreshing.

I’m going to read The Sun is Also a Star next week, so I’m happy to hear you’re enjoying it so far. I’ve only heard good things about it, so I was surprised you had heard complaining.
Here’s my week in reading.

Quite a few reviews I’ve seen complain about the fact that it’s not as good as Everything, Everything, but I guess that since I didn’t find that story to be perfect made me enjoy this one better. I hope you will enjoy it as well!

I haven’t read the first one, so I should be good!

Sounds like you’ve had a good run so far this year. I liked The Sun is also a Star but didn’t quite love. It was mostly the little asides that put me off. I loved the little snippets of other characters lives just not the history of language, religion etc. I kind of ended up skimming.
I’ve finished the Splintered series but am kind of on the fence about it. Didn’t hate but didn’t love either. It’s a quick and easy read but I didn’t really like the MC and word of warning, there’s a love triangle 🙂

Yeah, I can understand why those bits wouldn’t be for everyone… I personally liked those elements because I’m an immigrant myself (in Argentina though) and I can relate; on top of that, I’m a philologist nerd haha.
And noooo that is totally bad news for the Splintered series! A love triangle AND an unlikeable main character? That definitely doesn’t sound good…

Tempting books! I have a NetGalley copy of The Perfect Stranger, and I’m very eager to read it…soon.
Those Who Lie looks very good, too. Enjoy! Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.

Dasaaang, it looks like you had a great week! I’m jealous.
I don’t understand the hype behind You either. I stuck out the second book, and the MC strangely grew on me, but not enough to want to read the first book (one of those situations where you ask for it on NetGalley and then realize once you’re reading it that it is not the first in the series).
I haven’t heard anything about The Sun, but I adore that cover.
Hope you have another wonderful week 🙂

Requesting books that suddenly turn out to be sequels sounds so familiar haha; I’ve actually started double-checking books on Goodreads before I request them now. 😉 The Sun Is Also A Star is such a great read! I’m definitely going to try and get a physical copy just so I can stare at the cover some more. 😉 Happy reading!

I feel like it would be in the publishers best interest to say it was a sequel when soliciting for feedback. Sometimes it’s not a big deal jumping into the second in the series, but other times it doesn’t give the reader a good look.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yeah I can definitely agree to that. With some series you don’t need a lot of background info to still understand the sequels without any problems, but in general I tend to feel I’m missing out when I don’t read the previous books.

I’m glad you enjoyed The Sun is Also A Star. I haven’t read any of Nicola Yoon’s books yet, though she is one I keep meaning to get around to. I hope you like Splintered. I wasn’t a fan, but it has a lot of 5* reviews.

I really enjoyed both Nicola Yoon’s books, so I hope you will as well when you get to them! And I’m actually afraid to start Splintered since I’ve read so many mixed reviews and I’m having the bad feeling I won’t be a fan…

I hope you become inclined to read more of Little Women soon! It’s a charming read, in my opinion 🙂
I still haven’t read AG Howard though the name is everywhere with Roseblood’s release! Maybe next year…
