WWW WEDNESDAYS is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World Of Words and is all about answering the three questions below.
- WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
I picked up Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter on a whim as I’ve been meaning to read another of her titles for ages… I was planning to finally meet Will Trent, but I opted for one of the stand-alones instead. I’m enjoying it so far! I’m also starting a pending WWII fiction ARC: Along The Broken Bay by Flora J. Solomon. I’ve heard mixed things so fingers crossed I’ll end up enjoying it.
WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
1. The Closer I Get by Paul Burstonby (4,5/5 stars) BLOG TOUR REVIEW 22/07
My full review will be available during my stop of the blog tour next Monday!
2. Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens (4/5 stars) REVIEW 25/07
This is such a hyped book and I’ve lost count of the times it has been recommended to me since it was published last year. I definitely understand the love for the story, and while it wasn’t a 5 star read for me, I still thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. The pace might be slow in the beginning, but the character descriptions and setting are extremely detailed and wonderful done. I think my favorite part of this story were the many descriptions and references to the marsh and its wildlife… I also liked how past and present chapters were mixed and slowly helped you understand more about Kya, her past and the events leading to the present. I admit I guessed the ending, but I still think the twist was very well handled.
3. The Puppet Show by M.W. Craven (5/5 stars) REVIEW 25/07
Another title that has been recommended to me multiple times… So I was very happy the Instagram @criminallygoodbookclub picked it as their July read. I have found myself a new favorite character duo in Washtington Poe and Tilly Bradshaw! These characters are probably one of the main reasons I had no option but to give The Puppet Show the full five stars, because Poe and Tilly are absolutely brilliant together. Apart from that, we have brilliant written, a fascinating plot, wonderful descriptions of the Cumbria setting, a chilling serial killer and a dark dark secret and scandal of the past. What’s not to love?
4. Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson (3/5 stars) REVIEW 30/07
I picked up this Peter Pan retelling on a whim, looking for something a little different to read… It served that purpose just fine, but I ended up having mixed thoughts about the story itself. While I liked how the story was told from Tink’s POV and Tiger Lily was an interesting character, I felt that the so-called “spark” was missing and certain characters really started to get on my nerves. I wasn’t a fan of the romance either; it felt forced and the love triangle (should I say rectangle?) was quite frustrating as well. Can’t say I was happy with how the abuse and Tik Tok not being like the rest of the men of the tribe was handled either.
5. Small Places by Katherine Arden (3,5/5 stars) REVIEW 19/07
An entertaining middle grade horror read that would have been perfect for the Halloween month. More in my review on Friday.
- WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?
I need to get those blog tour and ARC reviews in so I can take a proper blogging break in August, so I’ll probably read The Escape Room by Megan Golding and Her Silent Cry by Lisa Regan next… And since it’s a blogging and not a reading slump I’m facing, I’ve decided to pick up the second Outlander book Dragonfly In Amber by Diana Gabaldon in between ARCs, which will take probably me a little while to finish with its 900+ pages and I won’t have to worry about writing reviews in the meantime. 😉 My newest TBR jar pick is still The Cellar by Natasha Preston.
You can also find me at Goodreads. Twitter. Instagram. Facebook. Bloglovin’.
It would have to be a very special book to sustain my interest over 900 pages…..

I’m worried it will be overlong as well, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed the historical setting and characters will keep me entertained.

I loved Pretty Girls. Unfortunately I think it’s the last novel I read by this author, I should definitely pick another one soon. I have Where The Crawdads Sing on my readlist, I’ve really been looking forward to reading that one. I try not to have too high expectations though, despite all the praise. Happy reading Yvo!

Have you tried The Good Daughter yet? It was one of my 2018 favorites last year! Having lower expectations will definitely make it easier to enjoy Where The Crawdads Sing, as well as remembering the beginning might feel a tad slow. Happy reading! xx

I had to check on Goodreads but it’s still on my Want to Read list! Will have to read it soon then. OK, I’ll try to remember both poitns when I read Where The Crawdads Sing, thanks for letting me know!! xxx

Oh pretty girls had to go in the freezer. I love Slaughter as a writer and have read everything she has written but pretty girls was a step too far for me. I love the grant county and will Trent plus crossover books the best though!!

Oh yes I can understand that… Pretty Girls took dark and disturbing to a whole different level. My favorite Slaughter is The Good Daughter so far, although I still need to try her series.

So happy you loved the Puppet Show, I recently bought a copy but as always seems to be the case I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. I really should bump it up the list but I feel you on the need to get the ARCs cleared first.
I’ve read the first Outlander book but I think that’s probably enough for me. I did enjoy it but they’re just soooo long and I’m not sure it’s wholly necessary. My mum has read the whole series though and loved them. Happy reading!

I can definitely recommend The Puppet Show if you can find time on your schedule! It’s a brilliant read and it has the advantage of having the sequel already published recently as well.
I’m worried about the Outlander sequel to be honest, as I liked the first book but I’m not sure if I’m invested enough to keep reading. Also, if I remember right a lot of Outlander fans did find the second book overlong and not as good as the rest of the series… We’ll see how things go I guess. 😉 H
Happy reading!

It was without doubt a very disturbing read, although not my favorite Slaughter.

It was quite good if you don’t mind the lack of credibility and the promise a VERY disturbing read.

Oh man… Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter. That’s the only KS book I’ve read and it messed me up. Probably one of the most f***ed up books I’ve ever read. I still think about it, but not in a good way lol
I’m interested in reading your review for Crawdads. It sounds like it is an enjoyable read, but not the best book you’ve ever held in your hands like everyone makes it out to be. I’m waiting for the hype to die down before I give it a go… maybe I’ll listen to the audiobook.

Oh yes, I can definitely agree with your thoughts on Pretty Girls. I don’t mind stories getting dark and ugly, but Slaughter took disturbing to a whole different level… I still have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to Slaughter’s books, but so far The Good Daughter is my favorite.
I do understand the love for Where The Crawdads Sing and I enjoyed it as well myself, so I guess the hype is probably worth it this time around. The descriptions of the marsh and nature are wonderful.

I started Dragonfly in Amber quite a while ago, but didn’t finish it. It’s very different from Outlander. But, I do want to go back and finish it at some point.

I’ve heard a lot of people saying Dragonfly In Amber isn’t as strong as the first book and quite slow… It’s one of the reasons I’ve been posponing actually picking it up. That and the sheer size of it. xD
