WWW WEDNESDAYS is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World Of Words and is all about answering the three questions below.
- WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
I’m currently reading Dead Scared by Sharon Bolton, a title I picked up on a whim when I was browsing for a quick read before the Magical Readathon N.E.W.T.s Edition starts tomorrow. I can’t believe it took me this long to meet up with Lacey Flint again! So far I’m flying through it and it’s turning out to be another winner.
WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
1. Her Silent Cry by Lisa Regan (4,5/5 stars) REVIEW
I’ve been a fan of this series ever since I read the first book about eighteen months ago. With each new meeting with Detective Josie Quinn, my love for this series is only reconfirmed all over again and each book brings the promise of yet another intense and suspenseful ride. Her Silent Cry is no exception to the rule, and already the sixth successful installment of this detective series. If you are a fan of intense and thrilling detective thrillers that pack a punch, you should definitely schedule yourself a meeting with Detective Josie Quinn soon!
2. Block 46 by Johana Gustawsson (4,5/5 stars) REVIEW 03/08
After multiple recommendations and reading fantastic reviews about both Block 46 and Keeper, I knew I could not go wrong with this series and I’ve been meaning to pick it up for quite some time now. I think the only reason I hesitated was that I knew I was going to be blown away and it would be impossible to write a decent review afterwards… Guess what? That is exactly what happened! I’m still recovering from the shock of this brilliant and harrowing read and I’m hoping I will be able to get something constructive on paper in the next few days. But in short: go get a copy and meet Emily Roy and Alexis Castells if you haven’t already!!
3. The Dark Descent Of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White (0 stars; DNF at 38%) REVIEW
I never in a million years would have guessed I would be having this reaction to The Dark Descent Of Elizabeth Frankenstein. I’m really sad I ended up having to make the decision to DNF The Dark Descent Of Elizabeth Frankenstein, especially as I fully expected to love this Frankenstein retelling… Was it simply the wrong book at the wrong time? Or did the unpopular opinion curse strike again? Who knows, but the fact is that this story and me really didn’t get along.
4. The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides (4/5 stars) REVIEW
There has been so SO much hype around The Silent Patient ever since it came out earlier this year, and honestly I’ve been too afraid to pick it up myself. Hyped books and me don’t tend to get along, so I thought it was wise to stay away for the time being, but curiosity took over and I ended up giving in anyway. I’m happy to report that I definitely understand the love for this story now! True, I didn’t LOVE love The Silent Patient like most, but I still thought it was a more than solid psychological thriller that made me race through the pages like there was no tomorrow.
5. The Rose & The Dagger by Renee Ahdieh (4/5 stars) REVIEW 26/08
I really enjoyed the first book of this duology back in 2015 despite the slow start, but somehow I never picked up the second book when it came out in 2016. I’m glad I finally did though, because despite the love triangle being just as annoying as ever, I really enjoyed the new developments and appearance of magic in The Rose & The Dagger. Finally reading this one also means I now have one less series to finish!
6. Física Hasta En La Sopa by Hernán Grecco (4/5 stars) BABELIO
I also read and reviewed Física Hasta En La Sopa, a book I received through the Masa Crítica Argentina program at Babelio and was provided to me by the publisher earlier this month. This title can’t be found on Goodreads and as it’s only 48 pages long anyway, I won’t count it towards my read books this year… If you are interested in what I thought of this title, you can find my review (in Spanish) clicking the Babelio link above. It’s a great website for anyone who reads in Spanish!
- WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?
The Magical Readathon N.E.W.T.s edition starts tomorrow, and during the month of August I will only be reading titles that fit the different prompts… First up are An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena and Apple Of My Eye by Claire Allan; both titles I’ve been looking forward to finally read. I also plan to read Outrun The Moon by Stacey Lee soon. My latest TBR jar pick is still The Cellar by Natasha Preston, which I will definitely pick up later in August as soon as I have ‘unlocked’ the prompt it belongs to.
You can also find me at Goodreads. Twitter. Instagram. Facebook. Bloglovin’.
Dead Scared is one of scariest books I’ve read!

I definitely get that! I still have about 60% to go, but so far the whole situation with the bad dreams, creepy things happening to the characters and the suicides are without doubt creeping me out. I also constantly wonder how Lacey ended up on that roof in the first chapter? I’m definitely sitting down to finish Dead Scared later today.

It might be a little while before my review is up, but I can already say that I definitely loved this story! Very twisted and disturbing, and literally stuff made out of nightmares. 😉

I felt the same way about The Silent Patient. It was just entertaining. 🙂 I love the cover of The Cellar! Hope it’s good!

Good to hear I wasn’t the only one! I’m keeping my fingers crossed The Cellar will be a good one.

I’m sorry you had to DNF that book. I gage when that happens, especially when I’m expecting to love the book.

It’s always such a shame! I never like DNFing a book, but my TBR pile is too high to linger too long on books I really can’t get into. 😉

It’s always disappointing when you decide you really can’t finish a book – especially if its one you’e been looking forward to reading. But there are plenty of others just waiting to be opened …

Very true, and it’s one of the reasons I decided to DNF despite the fact I have enjoyed her work in the past and it might just have been the wrong book at the wrong time for me.

Guess who is reading Keeper (and probably Blood Song as well) next month? 😉 ❤

I’m sorry you had to DNF a book you were expecting to like. Hopefully, if you ever decide to try again you will be more in the mood for it. I’m such a mood reader myself so I’m constantly picking up and putting down books, even if I know I could love them if the timing was better.
Looks like you’re picking up a lot of thrillers. I am in such a thriller mood aswell! I recently read Shari Lapena’s other book the Couple Next Door. Have you read that one? For me, it was kind of underwhelming but I would definitely try some other books by her in the future.

I’m a mood reader as well so I totally understand! I might get back to it in the future, although I’m not convinced I would react differently to the writing style and pace…
And I love my thrillers! Easily a third of my reads are thrillers, although I guess that percentage has been even higher lately as I’ve in the mood for them haha. I did read The Couple Next Door, although it has been a while ago… I remember finding it an entertaining read, although it failed to blow me away completely.

Oh gosh, the NEWTs start tomorrow?! I was going to participate, but I’m so far behind on my reading that I don’t know now whether I am or not. Ahhhh. Decisions are hard.
Sorry to hear The Dark Descent Of Elizabeth Frankenstein didn’t work for you. I thought I would love it, but I had a hard time with it, too, and it ended up being a bit disappointing for me, too. Though, you didn’t miss a whole lot, I have to say. By the end, Elizabeth was like, “You’re a monster, Victor!” And I had a really meta moment where I had to stop and make sure I was still reading the same book like … umm … yeah. Did you not read the first 80% of your own story, Elizabeth?! Why is this shocking?!
Your upcoming books look interesting! I hope they work out a little better.

Maybe you could try to fit your pending reads to the prompts of the N.E.W.T.s? Most are pretty open and easy to fill with whatever is on your TBR; I’m reading quite a lot of pending ARCs that way. 😉
I’m happy to hear I wasn’t the only one to struggle with Elizabeth Frankenstein! You have only reconfirmed to me that I made the right decision to DNF… It doesn’t sound I missed much. Elizabeth annoyed me considerably and that statement actually fits my view of her character quite well haha.

I might just do that! I love the NEWTs prompts, and I was sorry to sort of miss the OWLs. xD
I liked where I thought her character was going. I was a little disappointed with where their characters went at the end. If you weren’t feeling it until that point, though, I don’t think you missed anything, as you probably wouldn’t have liked the rest, either.

What I love of these readathons is just how easy you can accommodate it to your own reading habits. 🙂
And that’s good to know! I don’t think I’ll try to continue Elizabeth Frankenstein in the future then…

That’s the best sort of readathon! I did check out the prompts, and I can definitely make these fit my ARC August reads. 😀 Woot!

I did a happy dance when I spotted Block 46!!!!! This series will be the death of me!!!!!!!!
I really want to read An Unwanted Guest! xxx

Oh Sharon Bolton is great! I’m still behind myself, but I’ve read the first two Lacey Flint books now (both brilliant) and I can’t wait to pick up my copy of The Craftsman.
And I’m not sure how to cope with Block 46! I’ve been staring at an empty draft for days now and I can’t seem to express my love for this story. xD

Oh, I’d forgotten about Bolton and Lacy Flint! Thanks for that reminder💜 Highly recommend An Unwanted Guest as your next choice.

I still can’t believe it took me this long to meet Lacey Flint again! Book two is brilliant and I really need to get copies of the final two books now. And I’m picking up An Unwanted Guest later tonight! I can’t wait to read it. 🙂
