WWW WEDNESDAYS is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World Of Words and is all about answering the three questions below.
- WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
No October is complete without spooky reads, and I’ve been saving Victoria Schwab‘s newest title Tunnel Of Bones especially for this Halloween month. I’m so excited to be diving into this sequel! I’m also starting another ARC: Close To You by Kerry Wilkinson. The blurb sounds absolutely brilliant, so I can’t wait to see if the story itself lives up to expectations. His writing is great, so I’m pretty sure I’ll enjoy it…
WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
1. Hope And Other Punchlines by Julie Buxbaum (4/5 stars) REVIEW 11/10
Julie Buxbaum is one of the select group of authors who can make me enjoy the contemporary romance genre. After loving her first two YA books, it’s easy to say that my expectations were sky high for Hope And Other Punchlines. It might have been the wrong time to pick up this title, or it might have been that my expectations were a tad unrealistic, because while there is no doubt that this story is an excellent read, it didn’t blow me away as I thought it would. There is a lot to love in Hope And Other Punchlines though.
2. The Huntress by Kate Quinn (5/5 stars) REVIEW 05/10
I kept seeing glowing reviews about The Huntress and I love my WWII historical fiction, so I was super excited to finally dive in myself. It’s the first time I read one of her books (I have The Alice Network on my TBR though), and I was definitely blown away by what I found. Say hello to another 2019 favorite! The complex and rich plot, the writing, the different characters and settings… There is so much to love in this story and it’s without doubt one of the best WWII inspired historical fiction stories I’ve read to this date.
3. Cage by Lilja Sigurdardottir (4/5 stars) REVIEW 04/10
Look out for my full review during my stop of the blog tour this Friday!!
4. Coraline by Neil Gaiman (4/5 stars) REVIEW 18/10
I’ve been a fan of Neil Gaiman‘s work for a while now, but somehow I never actually read Coraline despite having seen the movie… Until now. I thought this little book would be the perfect title to mark the start of the Halloween month with, and is without doubt a story that gives off the exact right creepy vibe. The writing is of the same high quality I’ve become used to of Neil Gaiman, and while it’s not my favorite story of his, I definitely had a great time discovering the story of Coraline. And with its spooky and eery vibe, it’s a perfect choice if you are looking for a quick and fun Halloween read!
- WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?
Next up is another upcoming #Orentober blog tour read I’ve been looking forward to: Little Siberia by Antti Tuomainen. I’ve been meaning to try his work for ages and I love the blurb for this story! I also need to read the ARC Like Follow Kill by Carissa Ann Lynch some time soon… And another #Orentober read is up soon as well: Hydra by Matt Wesolowski for an upcoming #WesolowskiWednesday post. I’m also reading my latest TBR jar pick The Museum Of Extraordinary Things by Alice Hoffman no matter what before the end of the month.

I guess I need to read The Huntress! Lol. I’m glad you enjoyed the new Julie Buxbaum. I love her books!

I love her books as well! And I can highly recommend The Huntress; it’s a long read with multiple storylines, but well worth investing your time in. 🙂

I saw Antti at Capital Crime and we talked about the humor in his books, I can’t wait to know what you think of Little Siberia! I should read it too! x

I’m so ready to discover how he incorporates the humor in his books! I really want to read his other title Palm Beach Finland soon as well. xx

I have been swithering over whether to read the Huntress or not. I don’t typically go for historical fiction or WWII reads but I’ve seen so many great reviews I’m tempted.
I’m also hoping for some spooky reads this month and I think City of Ghosts is going to make my spooktober reading list. Also hoping to read Little Siberia as soon as possible. I loved Palm Beach Finland.

The Huntress is definitely proper historical fiction and quite long with the multiple storylines, but I personally loved it. It’s a mix of war and post war elements and ‘hunt’ part was a very unique touch.
I’m so looking forward to read a few spooky reads this month! After Coraline and Tunnel Of Bones, I want to read at least The Twisted Tree as well. And I can’t wait to read Palm Beach Finland! Little Siberia also sounds great.

Cage was an excellent conclusion of the trilogy! Quite different than the first two books as the focus is on Agla mostly, but fascinating anyway.

I’ve never read anything by Neil Gaiman – what would be a good one to begin with?

My personal favorites are Neverwhere and The Ocean At The End Of The Lane, and the second is probably a better choice as it’s lighter on the fantasy.

Oops, I’ve now realised I HAVE after all read Gaiman – it was Ocean at the End of the Lane which I did enjoy So now I should try Neverwhere

I’m glad to hear you enjoyed The Ocean At The End Of The Lane! Neverwhere is different in the sense that it is more urban fantasy, but it’s my personal favorite. American Gods is also really good.

I’ve been lining them up to fit the Halloween month… Although I might squeeze in something more fluffy in between haha. I have been eyeing The Bride Test or The Unhoneymooners, so who knows?

Those are both fun romances!

Too true! I don’t even want to look at my own TBR pile as I’m sure it would fall over on top of me out of spite. xD

Man, I bought City of Ghosts last year, and I still need to read it before grabbing the sequel. xD I look forward to seeing what you think of it, though! I’ve enjoyed Schwab’s other work, and I’ve been waiting for October to return to this one. Looks like you had a really good reading week! Look at those high ratings! Hope that streak continues. Your upcoming books look pretty dang good. Happy reading.

City of Ghosts (and Tunnel Of Bones too) is definitely perfectly for this time of the year! Both books are so much fun to read. xx

I need to read Coraline. It’s actually one of my favorite movies to watch around this time of year. Need to go see if my library has it.

I need to read V.E. Schwabs books. I really haven’t gotten around them, shame on me. hehe. And as you know, I’ve read Coraline last week too and unlike I was never a fan of Neil Gaiman. His works and I just don’t get along…Until now. I really, really enjoyed Coraline. I haven’t watched the movie though? Is it as good as the book?

There are just too many books out there! I don’t even what to look at all those books I should have read already by now haha. I’m happy to hear you connected to Coraline! I really liked the movie too, although it’s been a while since I last saw it.

I hope you enjoy Tunnel of Bones — even that title sounds like such a great October read! I’ve still yet to read a Neil Gaiman book and I’ve heard such great things. Which would you recommend picking up first? Happy reading!

I just finished Tunnel Of Bones and it’s without doubt the perfect Halloween read! And as for Neil Gaiman: it kind of depends what you are in the mood for. If you want quick and entertaining for a younger audience, both Coraline and The Graveyard Book are great. My personal favorites are Neverwhere and The Ocean At The End Of The Lane though; the second is probably more ‘approachable’ as it’s less heavy on the urban fantasy. Happy reading!

I’ve heard a lot of good things about The Ocean at the End of the Lane so I might start there! I’m excited to finally start reading them. Thank you!

Sounds like you’ve read a lot of good ones lately – yay! The only author I’ve read of your list is Neil Gaiman, who I love, but I actually haven’t read Coraline yet. I just don’t read that many graphic novels. It’s something I’ve wanted to start doing more, I just haven’t yet. I did enjoy his Sandman books – they are super creepy though!

I didn’t know Coraline had a graphic novel! The version I read has pictures, but is basically a regular MG read. Probably why I read it, because I don’t really read graphic novels either haha. I haven’t tried his Sandman books though!

Oh that’s funny – I didn’t realize it was a regular novel first! Sandman is really good, but definitely has lots of horror elements, so if you are squeamish in anyway, just be prepared. Otherwise it’s amazing. There were a few pages I had to skip over really quickly though.

I don’t mind horror, so I should definitely give them a try some time soon!
