WWW WEDNESDAYS is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World Of Words and is all about answering the three questions below.
- WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
I’m currently reading Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane both because I want to make a jump start with my TBR jar picks and I’ve been curious to read it… I definitely can’t wait to compare it to the movie! I’m also starting The Love Song Of Miss Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce so that I can cross my first series of the list. I loved the first book, and I have high hopes for this one!
- WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
1. The Dog Share by Fiona Gibson (3,5/5 stars) REVIEW 28/01
I’ve been craving more contemporaries than usual lately, and there was just something about the blurb of The Dog Share that caught my eye immediately. I love books with a focus on animals, and I loved the sound of this story where a dog played a significant role. I’ve been looking forward to pick it up ever since, and when I was in the mood for the genre again I decided to simply give in and read it. And I most definitely liked what I found! Sure, I was a bit surprised by the lack of romance at first, as you won’t find much of that until well into the second half, but as a whole I found The Dog Share to be an enjoyable reading experience.
2. Fractured by Karin Slaughter (4/5 stars) REVIEW 23/01
I finally met Will Trent last month, and after a successful first meeting I’ve been looking forward to continue the series. And the sequel Fractured without doubt didn’t disappoint! I had a great time meeting up with him again and learning more about his character… I did guess who were behind it early, but as a whole this was a more than solid read and I will be looking forward to continue the series after I read the Grant County books.
3. Deity by Matt Wesolowski (5/5 stars) BLOG TOUR REVIEW 14/02
Look out for my thoughts during my stop of the blog tour next month!
4. Caraval by Stephanie Garber (DNF 35%; 0 stars) REVIEW 23/01
I’ve been meaning to try this trilogy ever since the first book came out in 2017, as it sounded like a truly magical experience and the Caraval game sounded like the perfect backdrop for a successful story. So many people seem to love this series as well, so I was completely expecting to be adding a new favorite to my list… But in the end it wasn’t ment to be. I was looking forward to something magical, but somehow this story wasn’t able to enchant me at all. Instead, I felt mostly underwhelmed and SO frustrated I ended up throwing in the towel and not even finishing it… More about the why in my DNF review.
5. Exit by Belinda Bauer (4,5/5 stars) REVIEW 25/01
I have a weak spot for stories with older main characters and having crime and humor combined sounded absolutely brilliant. A comparison to Jonas Jonasson‘s dark humor sealed the deal for me, and now I have read Exit I definitely stand by this comparison. This kind of dark humor might not be for everyone, but for me personally it was a perfect match and I loved every single minute of my time with Exit. Such an unique and well executed crime thriller!
6. The Mysterious Disappearance Of Aidan S. by David Levithan (4/5 stars) REVIEW 02/02
I’m hoping to read more Middle Grade reads this year, and there was just something about The Mysterious Disappearance of Aidan S. that caught my eye immediately. And then I’m not just talking about the stunning cover… The promise of a mysterious disappearance, an impossible to believe story and the consequences of telling such story sounded absolutely fascinating, and I’m glad to say that the execution without doubt lived up to expectations for me. This turned out to be an excellent MG story that is perfect for the target group as well as older readers!
- WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?
I’m hoping to get part of my classics in early, so I’ve decided to just go ahead and read the next Hercule Poirot The Big Four by Agatha Christie. I’ll be looking forward to meet up with him again! I also have the ARC Lost Souls by Chris Merritt due soon… And since I’ve been craving contemporaries, I’m pretty sure I will pick up The Match by Sarah Adams as well. I also have a new TBR jar pick! Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly. I can’t wait to read this one, as I loved the movie and I’ve been meaning to read more non fiction in the first place.

I’m surprised to be honest I had such a negative reaction to Caraval! But I guess the writing style is one of those you either love or hate… Happy reading! xx

Caraval wasn’t for me either. I did finish it, so clearly I enjoyed it more than you did, but I was never tempted to read the sequel.

Good to know I wasn’t the only one with a negative reaction though… There was just something about the writing that irritated me so much I didn’t even want to bother reading until the end. xD

I’m sure I will enjoy it! Any romance without a focus on steamy scenes is a bonus for me. 😉

I remember Caraval being all the rage, but I never read it, either. I think I read too many mixed reviews at the time. I also want to try reading The Match again. I started it once and liked it, but was just in a weird reading mood and never finished it. I look forward to hearing what you think of it!

I think Caraval is one of those books you either love or hate depending on how you react to the writing style and characters… And I’m looking forward to The Match! I’ve heard it’s more ‘clean’ romance so perfect for me haha.

Yvonne, sorry to hear you had to DNF a book in the last week, but thankfully looks like your other reads well and truly made up for it! I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Shutter Island, as I loved the film. Happy reading! 😃

Shutter Island turned out to be great! I wish I hadn’t seen the movie already though, because it kind of ruined the mayor plot twist a little…. But the book itself is without doubt worth reading. Happy reading!
