WWW WEDNESDAYS is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World Of Words and is all about answering the three questions below.
- WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
My Masa Crítica Argentina ARC copy of Los Plebeyos by Marta Lopetegui finally arrived last week, so I decided to read it now so I don’t have to worry about more deadlines in March… It’s a short one so I hope to finish it today. I’m also starting Viper by Bex Hogan as I’ve been neglecting the fantasy genre and I couldn’t resist Kelly’s recommendation. 😉
- WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
1. Ladies Of The House by Lauren Edmondson (4/5 stars) REVIEW
I confess that this debut was out of my comfort zone as I’ve never actually read one of the original Jane Austen stories and I wasn’t sure how I would react to this modern retelling… But there was just something about the blurb of Ladies Of The House that convinced me to give it a try. I’m so glad I did now, as I ended up having an excellent time with this story! I can’t compare it to Sense And Sensibility for obvious reasons, but what I can say is that this modern retelling is absolutely worth the time if you think you would be a good fit.
2. The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez (2,5/5 stars) REVIEW 21/02
I was going in expecting a fun romcom, but I ended up feeling considerably underwhelmed by The Friend Zone. When I first started reading it, I thought I had found another winner as I loved her writing style, the dynamics between the characters and the blunt banter. I had really high hopes for this story, especially with the infertility angle… But in the end this story let me down considerably. More about the why in my review.
3. Hotel Cartagena by Simone Buchholz (4/5 stars) REVIEW 08/03
Look out for my thoughts during my stop of the blog tour!
4. Martinis And Memories by A.L. Michael (3/5 stars) REVIEW 25/02
I had high hopes for this third Martini Club story… Especially since I enjoyed the first two books and really liked Bel’s character in the previous stories as well. Imagine my surprise when I ended up having mixed thoughts instead: it took me a long long time to warm up a little to Martinis And Memories, up until the point that I even considered DNFing it before things started to improve in the second half.
5. Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly (3/5 stars) REVIEW 21/02
I love the movie adaptation, so I have been looking forward to read the original book… It’s without doubt a fascinating and powerful topic and it was interesting to learn more about the women and their past. I do have to say that it can get quite dense as it is a true non fiction book with lots of facts and technical terms, which slowed down the pace considerably and made it less enjoyable to read.
6. A Caller’s Game by J.D. Barker (4,5/5 stars) REVIEW 19/02
I’m a big fan of his books and this was one of my most anticipated releases… And I ended up having a fantastic time with this story!
- WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?
I’m hoping to get a couple of non fiction reads in early this year, so next up is This Is Going To Hurt by Adam Kay… I also need to read Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers as it’s due soon, and I will probably pick up The Island by Ragnar Jonasson after that so I can work towards finishing another series. Last but not least, I have a new TBR jar pick! Inborn by Thomas Enger… I was going to start with reading his Henning Juul books, but my TBR jar has spoken so I’m reading this YA stand-alone first now. 😉

What a shame you didn’t enjoy Martinis and Memories as much as you’d hoped to! xx

I’m still surprised really, especially considering I really enjoyed the first two… But somehow I really didn’t like how Bel was portrayed here, and especially in the first half.

Part of the reason has to do with the ending (and I know I’m not alone here), and I struggled with the attitude of the MC as well…

I am always so impressed with how much you manage to read each week!! I really am curious about Honey Girl because I’ve been seeing it a lot lately! I can’t wait to see what you think!! Have a wonderful week! ❤

I’m still not sure how I’m managing to read this much lately! I don’t think I’ll be able to keep it up for long though haha. Honey Girl sounds so good! There has been a lot of hype around it lately though. Have a wonderful week!

I go through spurts too. I go through a bunch of books for like a month and then not so much. haha. It’s great while it lasts though.

True that! I’ve been picking up a lot of shorter or fast reads lately too, which always helps keeping up the pace. 😉

I think I’m going to skip The Friend Zone now. I read another review recently from another blogger friend that said the same thing you did here. I’m sorry it let you down!

It’s such a shame especially considering I really enjoyed her writing style and the initial banter between the characters… I’m still going to try the sequel, but as it has some of the same characters I’m a bit worried how I will react.

Nice mix of books Yvo. I found Hidden Figures a dense read as well, but I am glad I read it before watching the movie.

I probably would have enjoyed the book better if I had read it before the movie! I expected something lighter on the technology/history and more focus on the women themselves after watching it first… Which is basically my own fault. xD

Yes, the book was very technical. I enjoyed the movie more, but missed many of the women that were in the book and just mentioned in the movie.

Ah yes you are right about that!

I was wondering if Hidden Figures was going to have more detail! I watched the movie first too and I found myself asking a lot of questions that sound like are answered in the book. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on Honey Girl as well! I have a hold placed at my library. Happy reading!
