  • WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

I’m currently reading Broken Bones by Angela Marsons as I was craving another dose of DI Kim Stone… I’m loving the series so far so I have high hopes for this one. I’ll also be starting Talk Bookish To Me by Kate Bromley, which I’ve heard good things about.

  • WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

1. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (5/5 stars) REVIEW 19/09
BOOM!! Andy Weir has done it again!! The Martian is one of my all time favorites, and even though Artemis and me didn’t get along I’ve been highly anticipating his newest title. And I’m happy to announce that Project Hail Mary was another absolute success for me! I guess it shows that I love his stories as long as he sticks with a male main character? Anyhow, Project Hail Mary. I confess that I’m usually not all that into space sci-fi, and especially if it has aliens involved, but this book is an exception to that rule.

2. Arsenic And Adobo by Mia P. Manansala (2,5/5 stars) REVIEW 20/09
I’ve been curious about this title ever since I first heard about it, so when my TBR jar thought I should just read it I jumped at the chance to do so. The combination of a cozy mystery and a food angle sounded like a perfect match, and I fully expected to love Arsenic And Adobo. Sadly, I guess it simply wasn’t ment to be. I still like the idea behind this story and the focus on Filipino culture and food, but as a whole this was mainly a dud for me. More about the why in my shorties review.

3. Indelible by Karin Slaughter (4,5/5 stars) REVIEW 20/09
I’m trying to finish the Grant County series as soon as possible, so I decided to pick up Indelible while memories of the previous book were still fresh. And I think this might just be my favorite of the series so far! And not just because we see so much less of Lena this time around… The idea behind this plot is brilliant too. Dark, explosive, shocking, thrilling; this is another wild ride and of course I’m not complaining.

4. How The Penguins Saved Veronica by Hazel Prior (3,5/5 stars) REVIEW 21/09
There was just something about How The Penguins Saved Veronica that made it impossible to resist getting a copy… Probably the combination of an older main character and the penguins, as I always love a story with an animal angle. I’ve been looking forward to read it ever since I first heard about it, and while it didn’t blow me away completely I still had a great time with it.

5. American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins (2/5 stars) REVIEW 21/09
So… There has been so much controversy around this title ever since it was published last year, but somehow I was still curious enough to see what I would make of this story. Especially since I love stories with a cultural element, and I’m always interested in a focus on Latin American culture. Sadly, I ended up siding with those who complained about American Dirt. I am by no means the person to correctly identify if this story is authentic, but what I can say is that it doesn’t feel that way. Too many cliches, the generic Spanish lacked flavor, the plot felt off, the immigrant descriptions likewise… And I wasn’t exactly a fan of the characters (they felt underdeveloped) or the writing.

  • WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?

Next up is probably the ARC Never Saw Me Coming by Vera Kurian as it’s due soon… I LOVE the sound of this one! Afterwards I will probably pick up The Summer Seekers by Sarah Morgan for a light read; then it’s back to thrillers with Faithless by Karin Slaughter. I hope to finish the Grant County series before the end of the month! I also have a new TBR jar pick (my final one to complete my yearly goal): The Humans by Matt Haig. I’ve been wanting to read more of his backlist so I don’t think I will have this one waiting long.
