  • WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

wwwaugust3rdcurrently

I’m actually close to finishing The Summer I Became A Nerd by Leah Rae Miller (probably be somewhere later today). I love the geeky/comic references, but the high school cliches and the fact that the main character is ashamed of liking comics is kind of ruining the story for me. I’ve also started The Girl From The Sea by Shalini Boland, a Netgalley ARC I’m really excited about. But I will most likely read Harry Potter And The Cursed Child first… Because I simply can’t resist a new Harry Potter story.

  • WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

wwwaugust3rd2016finished

* The first book I finished was When We Collided by Emery Lord, which turned out to be a really entertaining contemporary romance with an interesting twist. Vivi and Jonah are so adorable together!
* I also finished the Jamie Quinn Mystery Collection by Barbara Venkataraman. These three cozy mystery stories turned out to be entertaining and fast-paced; perfect for those who enjoy the genre.

  • WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?

wwwaugust3rd2016fnext

I will probably read my last pending Netgalley ARC first: The Last Girl by Joe Hart. I also want to read both The Art Of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson and The Bird And The Sword by Amy Harmon, depending on which genre I’m in the mood for. And Secret Letters by Leah Scheier is still my newest TBR jar pick…

  • WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

whenwecollided

I’ve only just started When We Collided by Emery Lord, but I have heard so many great things about it that I can’t wait to continue reading! I won’t be having a lot of spare time this week, but hopefully I will be able to finish it before the weekend.

  • WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

wwwjuly27th2016finished

* The first book I was able to finally finish was The Neverland Wars by Audrey Greathouse. I can’t say I really enjoyed it. The first part was quite slow and I had problems with the prose. I also wish the story would have focused on the war itself… The Neverland descriptions were really entertaining to read though.
* I then read the Dorothy Must Die novella Ruler Of Beasts by Danielle Paige. This one was probably one of my favorite novellas of the bunch… Mostly because Ozma played a big role in the story and a new interesting character (the Nome King) was introduced.
* Next up was The Summer That Melted Everything by Tiffany McDaniel, which made it to my list of favorite 2016 reads. Such a powerful and well written story! I can definitely recommend this one.
* I then finally finished The Hired Girl by Laura Amy Schlitz, a book I didn’t enjoy as much as I thought I would. I normally love historical fiction, but I didn’t like the main character Joan and there was too much ‘strong’ religious dialogue and cheesy romance in the last part of the story.
* Next up was the supershort, but action-packed story Environmentally Friendly by Elias Zanbaka. Without doubt an interesting and fast-paced read!
* I then read Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry for free at Riveted. Check out the website if you haven’t already; each two weeks or so they offer four new free titles to read online! (This one is available until August 1st). Rot & Ruin turned out to be a very good read, which I’m still surprised about because I normally don’t really like stories with zombies… But it’s well written and I like that there’s almost no romance (at least in the first book).
* The last book I finished is The Fire Child by S.K. Tremayne, which turned out to be even better than her first novel. Well written prose, great descriptions that set a spooky atmosphere and many many plot twists… Recommended!

  • WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?

wwwjuly27th2016next

I will probably read my last pending ARC first: the Jamie Quinn Mystery Collection by Barbara Venkataraman. It definitely sounds like an entertaining read! I also want to read The Bird And The Sword by Amy Harmon, but I might try Thunderlight by Adrienne Woods first. I really enjoyed the first book and since I’m in the mood for a dragon story this one sounds like a great choice. Secret Letters by Leah Scheier is still my newest TBR jar pick.

Laura at LaLa’s Blog contacted me last month with the question if I wanted to receive an e-copy of Firebolt in exchange for an honest review (with the permission of the author Adrienne Woods). As soon as I saw the blurb and read it was about dragons, I was sold. Fantasy stories with dragons are among my favorites and Firebolt turned out to be even better than I was originally hoping for. I loved the idea of dragons being some kind of ‘shapeshifters’ and both dragons and humans attending the same magic school. The worldbuilding is excellently done and with a fast pace and easy-to-read prose this first book in The Dragonian series is without doubt a quick and entertaining read. I do have to comment that some aspects of the story are a bit predictable and the novel ended with a big cliffhanger, but those were only minor setbacks in an otherwise solid story. I will definitely continue this series as I’m really curious what is going to happen with the main characters and their world. Recommended if you enjoy YA fantasy novels!

Elena Watkins doesn’t really believe in fairy tales, but her whole world is about to change as her father tells her they have to leave their home yet again. She thinks her dad is only paranoid, but it turns out he had an excellent reason to be on the run… And that night she sees her own father turn into a dragon to fight off more of these mythical creatures. Her father was killed and Elena now finds herself in a whole new world she doesn’t really understand; she has a hard time taking it all in. Dragons and magic actually exist, those dragons can take a human form and she will have to attend a new magical school as well… And to make things worse, an evil sorcerer might be trying to make his comeback. How will she deal with all this?

I had some minor problems with Firebolt that prevented me from giving it the full five stars, but it is easy to say that I more than enjoyed this read. I love dragons in general and I really enjoyed picturing Adrienne Woods‘ version of them. The shapeshifter element is a nice twist and I liked the fact that the humans can learn to bond and ride with them. Some parts of the plot were quite predictable (I won’t go into details to avoid spoilers), but the plot and worldbuilding were interesting enough for me to forget about it. If you like YA fantasy novels and enjoy dragon stories as much as I do, make sure to check out this series!

  • WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

wwwoctober14th2015currently

I finally did it: I started reading the book that has been on my TBR pile the longest! And The Mountains Echoed is just as good as Khaled Hosseini‘s other books so far, so I’m still not sure why it took me this long to finally pick it up. I’ve also started reading On The Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta… I’m not that far into the story yet, but it is yet another title I have been wanting to read for a while now.

  • WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

wwwoctober14th2015finished

I managed to finish no less than six titles since last week, so I’m pretty much a happy camper. Most of them were on my original October TBR so it looks like I might actually complete the list!
* Somehow I have never read a graphic novel before, but Through The Woods by Emily Carroll was hauntingly beautiful and the perfect introduction to the genre.
* My next read was The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom, a truly inspirational read about how we have become obsessed with time over the centuries.
* I then read Firebolt by Adrienne Woods, an ARC and fantasy story about dragons I absolutely loved. I will have to continue the series soon since the ending was a mayor cliffhanger!
* I was in the mood for a good crime story, so I picked up The Night She Disappeared by April Henry up next. It was a quick and entertaining read and just what I was looking for.
* I managed to finish The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern next. I really enjoyed this read and the descriptions and prose are more than beautiful. The odd pace did prevent me from finishing this read quickly though.
* The last book on the list was the only one I was slightly disappointed by this week: My Name Is Memory by Ann Brashares.

  • WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?

wwwoctober14th2015next

As soon as I finish And The Mountains Echoed, I wil start reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I have been wanting to start this series for ages now and I’m really looking forward to read it. I should read The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey first though since I have been starting way too many new series without reading sequels… And I have a new ARC, Ochoco Reach by Jim Stewart, pending as well. The last one, The Valentine Circle by Reinaldo DelValle, is my latest TBR jar pick I will most likely put on hold until I’ve finished most books on my October TBR.

  • WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

wwwoct7th2015currently

I’ve started reading The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern earlier this week and so far I’m really enjoying this read. Hopefully it stays this way! I’ve also decided to start reading my last pending ARC Firebolt by Adrienne Woods yesterday evening… It’s been a while since I’ve read stories with dragons and so far it looks promising.

  • WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

wwwoct7th2015finished

Five finished titles this week… Looks like I’m getting back on track!
* Americosis Vol. 2 by Haydn Wilks was a novella full of chaos and madness I was able to finish the same day I posted my last WWW.
* I then finished The Kill Order by James Dashner, which means I can finally leave The Maze Runner series behind… I can’t say I was impressed by this prequel story either.
* Before starting with my creepy reads, I decided to read An Abundance Of Katherines by John Green first. It’s a quick and entertaining feel-good story, although nothing mindblowing. The teenage dialogues are very well done like always.
* My first creepy read of the month was Asylum by Madeleine Roux, a story with just the right scary factor and a bunch of creepy old asylum photos to look at.
* The last book I finished this week is I Am Not A Serial Killer by Dan Wells. I had high hopes for this series, but it turned out to be a bit of a disappointment… I just wasn’t expecting the whole supernatural-demon-serial killer angle.

  • WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?

wwwoct7th2015next

I have said it probably a million times before already, but this time I’m really going to read And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini next. This title has been on my TBR pile longer than any other book and it’s about time I read it… Plus, it will help me finish two challenges. I also want to read On The Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta and I should read The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey since I have been starting way too many new series without reading sequels. The last one, The Valentine Circle by Reinaldo DelValle, is my newest TBR jar pick and looks like an interesting read as well. (Although I might try to read a few titles on my October/Halloween TBR first…)

  • WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

wwwsept30th2015currently

I’ve started both my current reads yesterday evening… The first is an ARC: Americosis Vol. 2 by Haydn Wilks. Since it’s a short story I will most likely finish it later today. The second is The Kill Order by James Dashner. I’m not exactly a big fan of the rest of the series (especially the last book was a mayor disappointment), but since people keep saying this one is actually better than the main series I decided to start it anyway. So far it’s quite a fast read.

  • WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

wwwsept30th2015finished

I actually finished Queen Of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas before my failed trip, but I decided to count it anyway. I loved this fourth book of the Throne Of Glass series and I will be waiting impatiently for the next book… Although I’m grateful the ending wasn’t the mayor cliffhanger I was expecting. The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski turned out to be a disappointment though. It had a really slow pace and I had the feeling the story could have been told with less pages. Most of the plot was quite cliche or at least predictable and I’m not sure I like the characters or prose for that matter. More of my complaints in the full review…

  • WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?

wwwsept30th2015next

I have Firebolt by Adrienne Woods, an ARC, lined up as one of my next reads. I might read And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini or Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver first though, depending on what genre I’m in the mood for when I finish my current reads. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is my newest TBR jar pick; a title I have been wanting to read for ages now and can’t wait to start soon!
