I had originally decided to include this new feature in my monthly wrap ups, but I just felt there were too many facts squeezed into one little post and the whole purpose of putting my favorite reads in the spotlight was lost. So this is me giving those favorites their well deserved extra attention! I had a LOT of fantastic reads in May, all worth mentioning so brace yourself for a long post. But there was one title that stood out above the rest, an easy choice for this month’s favorite. Did you guess already which one? Without further delay, May 2019’s favorite is… *drumroll*

Call Me Star Girl by Louise Beech!! I can’t believe this is only my first experience with her work, but it most definitely won’t be my last. What an absolutely fantastic read!
What I said in my review:
“The writing style is absolutely wonderful of course, but it is the characters who steal the show in Call Me Star Girl. Louise Beech should receive an award for being able to create such fascinating characters that are both flawed, strong and essentially unlikeable, but are able to win over your heart anyway.”
“Subtle twists and turns are incorporated in such a way that builds the tension and suspense without even realizing it; throwing new shocking information at you before you are getting comfortable with what you already know.”
Like I said before, I was lucky enough to have a month with a LOT of new favorites and fantastic reads, and I couldn’t bear not mentioning them all in this post. Brace yourself for seven nearly perfect and without doubt highly recommended stories! In the order I’ve read them:
What I said in my review:
“What a delightfully disturbing and twisted read! I always love it when we get to see a serial killer up close and Gretchen Lowell is without doubt one to reckon with.”
“This story has twists, turns and a healthy dose of action and suspense as well as an insight in the psychological aspects. You’ll be having a hard time putting this one down before you find out what happens, and the cliffhanger will most definitely leave you wanting for more.”
What I said in my review:
“This might just be my new favorite Ruth Ware title… What a creepy and suspenseful read! The house in Cornwall is such an excellent setting for this story filled with secrets and lies, and gives The Death Of Mrs. Westaway that gothic atmosphere. It definitely sets the right tone for this story!”
“The Death Of Mrs. Westaway was a delightfully twisty and eerie psychological thriller packed with secrets and a dangerous side. If you are a fan of the genre, you will most likely have a great time with this one.”
“Madeline Miller uses Circe’s immortal character to weave in a variety of different myths and stories about Gods and famous mortals alike. This is done exceptionally well and in a way that makes the story flow naturally.”
” I can see why Circe wouldn’t be for everyone, but if you enjoy Greek mythology retellings and don’t mind a slower pace at times, you will most likely enjoy it as much as I did.”
“The Vanishing Season has definitely succeeded in making this series go out with a bang. Things are going to get very personal and cold cases are going to get mixed with a current kidnapping case in a way you won’t be able to guess easily. There are twists and turns involved to mislead you and while you may get some details right, it will be impossible to imagine the full truth about the who, how and why until the very end.”
“I found myself flying through the pages as I was dying to discover how it all ended; I literally couldn’t put down my kindle until I got there. I liked how everything wrapped up nicely and I was more than satisfied with this final book of the series.”
“I already had a feeling I was going to enjoy this crime thriller by fellow book blogger and now debut author Noelle Holten, and my expectations were more than met. I literally cancelled all plans, settled down in my favorite reading chair and flew through Dead Inside in one sitting. It was simply brilliant!”
“Crime thriller fans, you have found a new title for your wishlist! Trust me, you don’t want to miss out on this outstanding crime thriller debut.”
“The real power behind Breakers are the main characters though. Both flawed and realistic, Tyler, Flick and little Bean will win over your heart and you will ache for them as things are spinning out of control. “
“Both character description and development are simply sublime in Breakers. It was fascinating to see how the different characters reacted to the situations that arised! This story was brutal and emotionally draining, but highly satisfying as a whole.”
“Book four is without doubt another excellent addition to the series. The writing style sweeps you away, makes you forget about daily chores and feel yourself part of the story.”
“Goblin Market is a wondrous world of fair value, debts and birds; the description of both world and the characters that inhibit it are excellent and truly make it come alive. The message behind this story, that of fair value and treating each other fairly in general, is an important one and plays a key role in this story.”
Have you read any of these titles above? What did you think of them? What were your favorite reads in May?

I loved Sweetheart and just finished book 4 in the series! So fantastic I can’t wait to read books 5 and 6. They’re seriously twisted but I can’t help liking Gretchen! I can’t wait to have time to read Star Girl! Great month of reading!

That’s great to hear! I only own a copy of the next one, so I have to get the other ones soon… Gretchen is such a fascinating character and definitely the reason the series works so well. I hope you’ll find time for Call Me Star Girl soon!

I got all 6 from the library, but I’m definitely buying the series. She really is. Oddly, she was only in book 4 for a few pages, but I still enjoyed it. I know she’s going to be back in book 5 though! I wish the series was a TV series and heard they optioned it, but I’ve not seen anything about it-I’ll have to do more research! I hope so too. I’ve got 3 more ARCs for June to read and then I’m going to read a couple of July ARCs but after that, the rest of the month is all mine for reading!

You’ve made me curious about book four and not having her present would work! I would love to have it as a TV series as well, but I haven’t heard about it either… I hope you’ll be able to read your own books again soon! I’m down to the last ARC and then it’s vacation until my only (for now) blog tour later next month. 😉

Ha! It worked well although I did miss her-trust me though, she was in Archie’s thoughts! It was him and Susan mainly in this one, which I liked, but I’ll be glad to have Gretchen back in book 5 😉 It definitely would! It was in the author’s notes in book 4-she was thanking someone for picking up the tv rights. I’d have to read it again. I wish she’d write more books; I love her style!
Oh, I’m so jealous! I’ve got 30 ARCS between now and the end of August and could beat myself, lol. I’m on summer break and am not sure why I ended up with so many when I usually only take on 4-6 a mth, LOL. I’ve got a blog tour on the 25th and need to start that book today! It’s my 1st blog tour and I hope I know what to do–it’s a review of the book, so I’ll have that done. I just hope I’m not supposed to do anything else that I have no clue about.

Oh that definitely sounds promising! I’ll be looking forward to read the next Archie and Gretchen books now. I love her writing style as well.
Trust me, the only way I finally managed is by reading mainly ARCs for a looong time and forcing myself not to request any new titles on NG… I never get physical ARCs, so I guess that can be seen as an advantage in a way haha. Wow, 30 ARCs is a LOT! I’m new to the whole blog tour thing as well; I mostly just write a review and share it on Twitter a lot… I’m not sure if there is more to it. (if there is, I’m doing things wrong as well 😉 )

I hope you enjoy them! LOL! I’ve only got 7 Netgalley titles left to read and only have one pending request, so I’m pretty good about not requesting. I just need to wade through these physical ones. 30 is a lot and I’m about to go mad, lol. Well, I got a blog tour kit email today so that helped. Haha! I wasn’t sure where I was supposed to get a picture telling where all the other blog tours where going to be, but that answered the question! I’ll probably post the review on IG too and tweet it. I just don’t want to mess up, lol. I just need finish the book and get the review written, but I should finish the book today. I hate writing reviews, so that’s going to be by the skin of my teeth! LOL

I can only imagine having that pile staring at you all the time! Fingers crossed they are great reads though. And yes, they normally send a blog tour kit with the schedule, author photo and information about the book and author… I think it’s okay as long as you share your review on the intended day and any other promotion is always welcome. I always take way longer writing blog tour reviews as I feel I need to give it a little something extra or else I would feel bad haha. Good luck with yours!
