Netgalley & It’s All About Books

I think every semi-serious book blogger out there has at least heard about Netgalley, a website that connects professional readers with publishers and authors. As a reviewer and blogger, you can use NetGalley for FREE to request, read and review new titles, which is a huge privilege on it’s own.

I have been wanting to create a Netgalley account for my blog for a long time (read: years), but somehow I always felt too intimidated and unworthy of calling myself a ‘professional’ blogger. I just love to read and talk about books with fellow book lovers; hopefully helping others find books they might enjoy as well in the process. But I thought the other day: why not give it a go?

Over the years, It’s All About Books has grown into a book blog with almost 800! followers and more than 2.000 monthly views, something I still can’t get my head around and I am immensely grateful for. I guess becoming an official Netgalley member is the next logical step on this book blogging adventure; one I’m really excited about!

I’m going to try and restrain myself from requesting tons of titles right away, but I did get this beauty below as my very first official Netgalley ARC: We Awaken by Calista Lynne! It’s scheduled to be published on July 14th 2016 by Harmony Ink Press, and I can’t wait to read it soon.

Are you a Netgalley member or do you want to be? What are your experiences with Netgalley? Feel free to comment!

It’s All About Books is going on a Backpacking Adventure!!!

The departure day has finally almost arrived! Yay! Tomorrow my hubby, the green monster (my backpack) and I will be starting our six week backpacking adventure… I’m so excited!!! 😀 😀 😀

We will be taking a 22 hour bus ride to the Bolivian border and we will start traveling Bolivia from there… Tupiza, the Salt flats, La Paz, Copacabana, Potosi; I can’t wait to visit those places and more! We will most likely visit the Peruvian side of the Titicaca lake as well, although the idea is to get back to Argentina with loads of time left so we can visit the northern provinces (Salta, Jujuy) before we travel back home.

As you might guess, I won’t be having a lot of time to blog or read during my trip… Having crappy internet connection most of the time doesn’t really help either. 😉 So It’s All About Books will also be on vacation until November; I’ve no posts scheduled (I still have a few book reviews, tags and awards lined up, but I just couldn’t find time to finish them before I leave) and most likely I won’t be able to respond to comments until I’m back…

So I guess I see you guys when I’m back in November!!!

Book Review Policy

Authors and publishers have contacted me in the past with the request of reviewing their book, and I’m grateful for them to consider It’s All About Books. I always enjoy discovering new authors and books and I tend to read books from a wide variety of genres. If you are a publisher or an author looking for someone to write an honest review of your book, you can contact me through my Contact Info page; I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Please note the following information before sending me a review request:

Please note that since I’m living in Argentina, the easiest way for me to review your book is in e-book form. Any format compatible with kindle would be highly appreciated. I will try to read and review the book that has been sent to me as soon as time allows and post my review both on my blog, Twitter, Goodreads and Amazon US.

IMPORTANT: Due to a stubborn blogging slump and health reasons, I’ve decided to take a partial blogging break until further notice. As a consequence, I won’t be able to accept any new requests for the time being. Thanks for understanding!

My reviews always follow this standard format:

  • The details of the book I’ve read (title/author/publish date/page count etc)
  • The rating which gives a general idea of my opinion according to my Rating System.
  • A quote to give those who read my reviews an initial feel of the story.
  • My Rambles, where I give my opinion of the book.

All my reviews are 100% my honest opinion and therefore I cannot garantuee a (completely) positive review OR a garantueed 4 to 5 star rating. To give an idea of the books I like and don’t like to read, I’ve listed both my top 5 favorite genres and the genres/elements I don’t read.

  1. Mystery/Thriller/Crime
  2. Historical Fiction
  3. Fantasy
  4. YA
  5. Memoirs/True Crime

What I DON’T read:

# Anything with (cheesy) romance or (romantic) cliches. Tropes like insta-love and love triangle are likewise a huge turn off.
# Erotica, sexy scenes, adult content etc.
# Anything involving vampires. I’m sorry, but if your story is about vampires, there is a 99,9% chance I won’t like it. Therefore I’ve decided to not read any new stories that have the slightest hint of fanged characters.
# Religious/inspirational stories. Especially if they sound preachy.
# Business/Financial.
# Political.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review policy! If you have any further questions you can ask them through the contact page.

Versatile Blogger Award

I promised myself I wasn’t going to do any blog award memes anymore and just thank everybody in my general Nominations & Thanks post… But no less than four awesome bloggers have nominated me in the last few days, so I thought why not share the love?! Thank you Sheetal @ Dreaming WordzAlina @ Radiant ReadsMaren @ The Worn Bookmark and Reckless Indulgence for the nominations!! 😀 ❤

poster-moment-awesome-you-are The rules of the award are:
1. Show the award on your blog.
2. Thank the person who nominated you.
3. Share seven facts about yourself.
4. Nominate 15 blogs.

I’m going to cheat and nominate all of you!! Thanks to the enormous amount of amazing book bloggers this community has been like the home away from home… Thanks for giving me the inspiration to keep reading and blogging! You guys rock!! ❤

On to the seven facts…

  1. I LOVE cooking and baking. I love experimenting with different foods from different cultures and normally don’t follow recipes unless I’m trying to cook something specific. My hubby doesn’t seem to complain hehe. I love anything curry and one of my favorite recipes would be this awesome mint oreo brownie. Soooo delicious, I wish I had a few pieces right now to go with my capuccino. 😉
  2. petsI love animals and I currently own a dog and six cats! Although four of those are little kittens born only two weeks ago and I will only keep one. 😉 My inlaws next door have another dog, so things are getting crowded outside haha. From top to bottom are Jazmin, the mother of Sienna below and the little kittens to the right. (The black one is a male, so I’m going to keep him, yay!) Then we have Paco, who we should have named Tornado or something; he is about 6 months old and totally destructive. Lastly is Pini who is owned by my inlaws…
  3. Sadly enough, I read more e-books than actual books… It’s not easy and rather expensive to buy paperback/hardback copies of English novels in Argentina, so I normally stick with the digital version. Sometimes I wish I would move to an English speaking country with my hubby just so I can buy more books! 😉
  4. My favorite color is blue and it shows; I even painted a few walls blue at home. 😀
  5. I hate the cold winter months! I can handle a one or two week vacation with snow, but anything longer than that and I will probably end up frozen solid. I’m the kind of person who has to wear three pairs of everything when the temperature drop below zero.
  6. I have lousy ankles and knees after playing too much volleyball when I was younger, but I’ve set myself a goal to participate in a 5KM run by the end of the year anyway. Wish me luck! 😉
  7. I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the guitar, but I’m a leftie and it’s not easy to find a teacher. I’m also a terrible singer, so even if I do learn to play, I wouldn’t be able to sing along.

One Lovely Blog Award

Romance Novels For The Beach and Anna @Friendlybookworm both nominated me for the One Lovely Blog Award last week… Thank you so much to both! I truly appreciate it; you guys rock! 😀 ❤

On to the Rules:

  • You must thank the person who nominated you and include a link to their blog.
  • You must list the rules and display the award.
  • You must add 7 facts about yourself.
  • You must nominate 5-15 other bloggers and comment on one of their posts to let them know they’ve been nominated.
  • You must display the award logo and follow the blogger who nominated you.

Seven facts about myself:

1. I use both this blog and reading English books as a way to keep up with my English, especially now I live in a Spanish speaking country… English is not my mother tongue. 😉

2. I’m not the typical girly girl, and I have to confess I dislike anything romance. Especially movies, I just can’t stand them… I do enjoying reading some books in the romance genre, but they are mostly exceptions. I tend to tolerate them as long as they aren’t too overly cheesy.

3. I love animals in general, but I am what you can call a crazy cat lady. 😀 My cat Jazmin gave birth to three kittens last month and they are totally adorable! ❤

4. I don’t cry in general when I read books. No, my heart is not made of stone, but I guess I just process the things I read in a different way… I don’t cry a lot in general either. 😉

5. I’m a late coffee bloomer, and only started to drink coffee about two years ago. AlthoughWP_002627 I have to mix it with a lot of sugar and/or milk to be able to enjoy it, I especially came to love cappuccino… Like the steaming mug of cappuccino that is in front of me right now.

6. My mind is what you can call quite chaotic, and I tend to forget things or misplace objects… It explains the abundancy of lists at It’s All About Books; it helps me keep more organized. 😉

7. I love anything crafty, and I’m always trying to invent and make new things to decorate my home… The latest thing I made were string lamp shades pictured to the right. 😀

Boy, there are so many great book blogs out there! It was incredibly hard to narrow it down to just 15 awesome blogs and bloggers… My nominations are listed below, although I would have liked to nominate every book blogger out there, you are all awesome! 😀

(For those I’ve nominated, please don’t feel obligated to participate if you don’t want to…)

Time To Celebrate!

The other day I realized I have been blogging at WordPress for more than a year now! I started posting my reviews at a different blog, but moved to WordPress in August last year. So it is time to celebrate and thank everyone who has visited, commented and supported my humble blog during the last year!!!

It means the world to me that my rambles are being appreciated, and I love that this blog has made me read more than ever AND made me get to know some very awesome people and great community. Thanks again! ❤

On to some numbers… In the last year blogging, 286 people decided that my rambles are interesting enough to follow It’s All About Books, and together have liked more than 1000 times what I’ve wrote. I have managed to read 100 books since I first started to keep notes of what I’ve read in November 2012 (although I still have to upload some older reviews), and I have reached the magical 150 post mark the other day as well! Woohoo! When I first started this blog, I wouldn’t have even dreamed about these numbers… And sometimes when I open my blog, I still cannot believe it. So… Thanks to all those awesome people out there! Let’s go celebrate with some virtual cupcakes and adorable kittens! 😀

Liebster Award

liebster-awardLast week I was more than pleasantly surprised when I found out I was nominated for the Liebster Award by wonderful Elli at Wortmagieblog! Thank you again for nominating me and forgive me for my late reply; it took me some time translating everything to English….

The rules:

  1. Write a post featuring this award, add the award logo and make sure you don’t forget to thank the person who gave you the award. 🙂
  2. Answer the 10 questions.
  3. Make up your own 10 questions for others to answer.
  4. Tag and nominate 10 amazing bloggers that have under 200 followers. (Or under 1000 followers if you prefer.)
  5. Let those bloggers know that they have been nominated for the Liebster Award!

My answers to Elli’s questions:

1. What was your first concert?
To be honest I can’t really remember, but I’m almost sure it is some Dutch artist my parents took me to when I was little.

2. Have you been to an opera or ballet show? If you did, which one?
I don’t think I’ve ever been to an opera, but does Cirque Du Soleil count for a ballet show? I’ve also seen a Chinese dance show that I don’t remember the name of about two years ago.

3. Do you read the newspaper daily? (Online version also counts)
I don’t read newspapers daily, but I like to read them from time to time to keep informed about what is going on in the world. I’m just not organized enough to remember to do it every day…

4. What classics have you always wanted to read, but until now always pushed down your readinglist?
That’s probably anything Charles Dickens or any titles involving romance… I’m just not the romance kind of girl.

5. Name three items that you carry with you every day (excluding keys, wallet and phone)!
That would be lip balm, my glasses and either chewing gum or sweets (having low blood pressure sucks!).

6. Is there a poem you have liked for years? If there is, which one?
I’ve been a Victoriano Cremer fan ever since I wrote my thesis about poetry after the Spanish Civil War, and a poem called Los Caminos Del Amor is one of my favorites.

7. If you could choose a supernatural ability, which one would you choose?
I would definitely choose either flying or teleporting. That way I can travel the world without having to pay for expensive train/bus/flight tickets.

8. Would you rather be a vampire or a werewolf? Why?
Definitely vampire. I would prefer being undead all the time and not having to go through all those painful werewolf transformations. Plus, vampires can change into bats and fly, which is pretty cool.

9. Which book do you read over and over again?
I haven’t re-read a book in a long time, but the last series I’ve read various times are The Hunger Games and Harry Potter. Brave New World is also on the re-read list.

10. With which famous deceased person would you like to go for a drink?
Hmm that is a very difficult one, especially because I think fame is just superficial and I don’t really care about the special status. It would probably be someone that made a big impact on history; like Abraham Lincoln or Martin Luther King for example.

I had some hard time thinking of my own questions, but here they are:

1.  Which do you prefer: an e-book or an actual book?
2.  What would be your dream travel destination?
3.  What is your favorite music?
4.  If you could have unlimited access to money, where in the world would you live?
5.  What is your biggest fear?
6.  If one of the three senses had to be taken away, which would you choose: sight, speech or hearing? Why?
7.  What would you say is your best quality?
8.  What is your favorite food when reading?
9.  I you could choose in which time you could live, would you choose the past, present or future? Why?
10.  Are you right or left handed?

Ok, so it was REALLY hard to nominate just 10 blogs for the Liebster Award, especially with so many amazing blogs and bloggers out there. If I nominated you below, I think you and your blog are pretty awesome! But it doesn’t mean your blog is any less amazing if I couldn’t nominate you… So on with the list:

Please don’t feel obligated to participate if you don’t want to! I just wanted to share the book love… I will be looking forward to the answers of those who decide to participate. 😀 And Elli, thanks again for nominating me! Please forgive me for any bad German translation. 😉

It’s All About Books

IT’S ALL ABOUT BOOKS… Well, at least books have an important role of my life. They form a way to escape reality; for me to enter a different world. A place where everything is possible, only limited by the imagination of its writer. Like someone famous once said: ‘Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body‘.

I’ve been reading ever since I was three years old, devouring books by dozens at my hometown library. I continued reading all the way through high school, and later decided to study Spanish Language And Culture (I have a degree in Spanish Philology) and read some more. A few years ago I started travelling, and that’s when the idea came up to start keeping track of the books I’ve read… Hence this blog It’s All About Books was born, with reviews of all the books I’ve been reading since November 2012.

While it’s true that I read books belonging to a wide variety of genres (I have what you call an eclectic taste in books) and I’m always honored to receive review requests, please take the time to read my BOOK REVIEW POLICY before continuing to my CONTACT PAGE to make sure that we would be a right fit.

Thank you in advance and happy reading!
